Sonic Expeditions is a classical recital featuring saxophone and piano, played by Michael Matthews and Ruby Lee, respectively. This recital includes works by Lawson Lunde, Paule Maurice, Robert Muczynski, and Fernande Decruck. 

This program, with its French and American flare, seeks to transport the audience through several energetic musical journeys during this dynamic performance.

Meet the Musicians

Michael Matthews Saxophonist

Michael Matthews is the Adjunct Instructor of Clarinet and Saxophone at Presbyterian College. He has performed in seven countries and seventeen states, and is a proud graduate of University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music and the University of Georgia’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Michael was an inaugural member of the Athens Hip-Hop Harmonic while living in Athens, GA, where he also gave the world premiere of Summer; a work involving improvisation and electronics, by Ayako Pederson-Takeda in 2022. In Rochester, NY, Michael performed in the Eastman Saxophone Project and was the baritone saxophonist of Scio Quartet, Bronze Medalists in the Senior Winds Division at the 47th Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2020, and winners of the 2019 MTNA National Young Artist Chamber Competition. Michael won the 2019 Nico Toscano Concerto Competition held by Cordancia Chamber Orchestra (Rochester, NY). Now living in Greer, SC, Michael also offers private lessons to the Upstate community.


Ruby Lee Pianist

Ruby Lee is a collaborative pianist based in the Greenville area, where she regularly performs. She holds a BA in Piano Performance from North Greenville University, a MM in Collaborative Piano from Louisiana State University, and a Performer's Certificate in Chamber Music from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She is well-versed in both vocal and instrumental repertoire. In the spring of 2020, Ruby was inducted into the Kappa Eta chapter of the Pi Kappa Lambda Honors Society at NGU. During her academic career, she has served as a vocal coach for singers, operas, and musicals. Her final semester of her master’s degree afforded her the opportunity to serve as rehearsal pianist and orchestral pianist for a new chamber opera. In the spring of 2023, she was a featured soloist with UWM's Concert Chorale's performance of A Silence Haunts Me by Jake Runestad. Additionally, she served as a guest artist at the American Gothic Performing Arts Festival, where she coached and performed operas, recitals, and musicals, including Gianni Schicchi and Hello Dolly! Recently, she music directed a new musical at North Greenville University. In the summer of 2024, she founded a trio that includes violin, viola, and piano. Currently, she serves as adjunct faculty at Presbyterian College and North Greenville University, and she also freelances at Furman University.
